The Office of the Chancellor at the University of California Berkeley is devoted to excellence in teaching, learning, and research, and to developing leaders in many disciplines who make a difference globally.  The Chancellor’s Immediate Office provides administrative, organizational, strategic, and compliance services to advance the Chancellor’s vision, core values, and priorities.  


The Chancellor’s Immediate Office is comprised of the following departments:


  • UC Berkeley Foundation - For more than half a century, the UC Berkeley Foundation has supported and advanced the mission of the University of California, Berkeley by encouraging private philanthropy, serving as a community ambassador, and advising campus leadership on specific issues.
  • Board of Visitors - The Board of Visitors is a non-governing advisory body, which carries on the work of its predecessor, the Chancellor’s Executive Advisory Council, to provide critical input and advice to the Chancellor.  



Vice Chancellor

Scott was appointed UC Berkeley’s Vice Chancellor – University Relations in December 2006, and led both fundraising and public affairs for the campus.  He came to Berkeley in 2002 as Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  Scott’s career in fundraising and alumni relations followed several years in banking and began at his alma mater, Rice University in Houston, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in English and Managerial Studies.

Associate Vice Chancellor

Claire Holmes is an accomplished executive leader with 15+ years experience in providing communications counsel and developing and executing award-winning communications initiatives and strategies leveraging media relations, internal communications and issues management strategies and programs for complex, large brands. She has demonstrated results in developing, executing or repositioning brand messaging and creative expression, and a successful track record in developing high functioning, strategic communications departments.

Chief Campus Counsel

Chris Patti began serving as UC Berkeley Chief Campus Counsel in 2010. From 1990-2010, he was a member of the Office of the General Counsel in Oakland where he specialized in litigation involving academic and student affairs, constitutional issues, class actions and other complex matters. His extensive familiarity with the University of California and the Berkeley campus and his deep understanding of the legal challenges confronting contemporary higher education enables him to make important contributions to growing legal and compliance needs of the campus.

Assistant Chancellor

Christine Treadway is Assistant Chancellor, Government and Community Relations at the University of California, Berkeley. A public policy professional with 25 years of experience working on higher education issues in government and university positions, Ms. Treadway manages a team of external relations staff who represent the University with policy makers at the federal, state and local level. In this position she serves as a political advisor to the Chancellor and oversees a comprehensive governmental relations portfolio including legislative, budgetary, regulatory, and advocacy strategies.

Interim Chief Ethics, Risk and Compliance Officer/Deputy Associate Chancellor and Chief Operations Officer

Deputy Associate Chancellor Ellison Crockett is the campus Interim Chief Ethics, Risk and Compliance Officer  (CERCO) and has responsibility for oversight and coordination of the campus’ ethics, risk and compliance requirements through the Office of Ethics, Risk and Compliance Services.   As the CERCO, she also has administrative oversight for the Staff Ombuds Office.

Special Advisor

David Chai is a Special Advisor to Chancellor Dirks at UC Berkeley and manages a variety of policy/communications/stakeholder outreach for the office. Chai worked in the White House during the Clinton Administration as Deputy Press Secretary and Special Projects Director for the Office of the Chief of Staff. His campaign experience includes serving as the Assistant Deputy Campaign Manager and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Clinton/Gore 1996 presidential campaign, Press Secretary for Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign in California, the War Room manager for the Democratic National Committee's response to the Bush/Cheney 2004 Republican Convention, and assisting with California Political Affairs for Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.

Special Projects Administrator

Jenny Kwon is the Special Projects Administrator in the Chancellor’s Office. Reporting to the Associate Chancellor/Chief of Staff, Nils Gilman, Jenny provides analytical, communication, and project management support for a wide range of projects, initiatives, committees, and working groups. She takes the lead in assigned areas for policy and program planning, development and administration, and research analysis in support of a broad array of initiatives directed by the Associate Chancellor.
