Nathaniel (Nat) Simons is the co-founder of Prelude Ventures, which manages a portfolio of investments in clean energy. Mr. Simons is also chairman of MWG GP LLC, the investment manager for the Meritage funds. Meritage engages in a combination of a hedge fund-of-funds and a direct investment strategy. Meritage spun out of Renaissance Technologies, an investment management firm in which Mr. Simons remains a principal. Along with his wife Laura Baxter-Simons (who holds bachelor’s degrees in German and Economics, and a master’s degree in German Literature, from UC Berkeley), Mr. Simons is co-director of Sea Change Foundation, a family foundation created in 2006 that focuses on climate change mitigation and clean energy policy.
In 2017, Mr. Simons and his wife signed the Giving Pledge, a commitment signed by individuals to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes over their lifetimes. Mr. Simons’ family has multiple connections to UC Berkeley. Among his relatives who attended Berkeley are his parents, Jim and Barbara. Jim Simons, the founder of Renaissance Technologies, earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Berkeley in 1962. Barbara, a computer scientist and former president of the Association for Computing Machinery, earned her Ph.D. in EECS from Berkeley in 1981.
Besides serving on Berkeley’s Board of Visitors, Mr. Simons has served on the board of The Exploratorium, and is currently vice chairman of the Renaissance board.
Mr. Simons holds a B.A. in economics and an M.A. in mathematics from Berkeley. He and his wife live in Berkeley and have two children.
