Pioneering initiative launched on equity, diversity and inclusion, backed by Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund
Wednesday, February 17, 2010
To All Members of the UC Berkeley campus community:
It gives me great pleasure to announce today a pioneering initiative on equity, diversity and inclusion that establishes UC Berkeley as a national leader in research, teaching and public service related to these issues.
The Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund has committed $16 million to the UC Berkeley Initiative for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, supporting a sweeping array of research projects, faculty chairs, student scholarships, dozens of new courses in American Cultures, and programs across campus. This generous contribution could total $31 million when fully leveraged.
This generous gift allows us to remain a beacon of access and excellence for students of all backgrounds and to become a national model in this growing area of research that is of such importance to society. It speaks profoundly to our public mission, now and for the future.
I invite you to find out more about this comprehensive initiative on the campus NewsCenter at http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/.
Yours sincerely,
Robert J. Birgeneau
Chancellor
