Dear Cal alums, parents, and friends,

When KJ Muldoon was just one week old, his doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia diagnosed him with a rare, life-threatening genetic disorder that prevented him from breaking down the proteins in his food. If he survived, he would have severe mental and developmental delays and require a liver transplant.

While the fires are now mostly contained, the destruction defies description, and the heartbreak demands our compassion.

Chancellor Rich Lyons, who in July became UC Berkeley’s 12th chancellor, invites you to join a stimulating conversation on the state of the campus — and his goals as the university’s new leader. Key issues that the chancellor is addressing include Berkeley’s commitment to free speech, academic freedom, fostering a sense of belonging, and facilitating what he calls “the constructive collision of ideas.” Joining Chancellor Lyons in conversation will be Shrinidhi Gopal ’25, president of the Associated Students of the University of California.
