Last fall, we launched a strategic planning process to define Berkeley's vision for the future and chart the path to our next era of excellence. Today, I want to update you on where we are and invite you to help shape what comes next.

A Three-Part Approach to Building our Strategy

Over recent months, we held listening sessions with faculty, academic and administrative leaders, students, alumni, our Board of Visitors, and our Board of Trustees. What emerged is a three-part approach:

Dear Cal alums, parents, and friends,

For UC Berkeley students who struggle to pay for food and housing, the recent government shutdown increased those challenges. Nearly 17,000 students lack reliable access to food, over 3,300 students encounter unstable housing, and more than 2,400 face both hunger and housing instability at the same time. Even though the shutdown has ended, their needs have not.

In its global rankings, the British magazine ranked Berkeley as the third-best public institution in the world, and the ninth-best university overall.

The bill helps the state grow the quantum economy and attract and retain businesses built on quantum information science, an area expected to evolve into a trillion-dollar-plus industry.

It was the second year in a row Berkeley received the distinction.

Of the more than 1,700 U.S. colleges and universities evaluated, Berkeley claimed the No. 1 spot of all public schools in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
