Jim Knowlton is the Director of Athletics at UC Berkeley. With a distinguished background in intercollegiate athletics leadership and military service, Jim brings extensive expertise in athletic program management, leadership development, and strategic planning.
Previously, he served as Athletic Director at the U.S. Air Force Academy and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was named Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Throughout his career, Jim has emphasized leadership and character development among student-athletes, academic and athletic excellence, and strategic fundraising initiatives.
Jim holds a long-standing commitment to fostering high achievement and currently oversees Cal’s athletics program, which sponsors 30 sports and supports more than 850 student-athletes. He formally assumed the role of Director of Athletics at Berkeley on May 21, 2018.
