UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks issued the following statement on June 12, 2016:
On behalf of the UC Berkeley community I want to express our deep sadness and profound outrage over the appalling loss of innocent lives in Orlando. Today we are all citizens of that wounded city, and stand in solidarity with its residents. Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the dead, and we pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. Now, more than ever, we must come together to fight the forces of intolerance, strengthen the foundations of our democracy, and do what we can to eliminate the unlawful use of firearms.
