James Lau

James Lau

James Lau (B.A. ‘81 Computer Science & Applied Mathematics, UC Berkeley; M.S. ’82 Computer Engineering, Stanford) co-founded NetApp in 1992. He served as VP Engineering, CTO, and Chief Strategy Officer. He retired from NetApp in 2015. Prior to starting NetApp, Mr. Lau worked at Auspex Systems, Bridge Communications/3 Com, and HP.


In 2007, Mr. Lau received the IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award and UC Berkeley College of Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award. He is named as co-inventor in 13 patents.


Mr. Lau is a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee for the Light the Way Campaign. He is also a member of the College of Engineering’s Advisory Board, M.E.T. Founding board, and the joint UC Berkeley Foundation and Board of Visitors Research Committee. Mr. Lau and his wife also served as campaign co-chairs for “The Campaign for Berkeley” and are Builders of Berkeley.
